Abstract
Carter and Boyd is a large US-based global law firm that is seeking to compete more effectively in a challenging market. The managing partner, Sally Benino, has asked the firm’s attorneys to collaborate across offices and practices as a means to expand client relationships and build more institutional clients. The case follows three partners who face different collaboration challenges and concludes with the client’s perspective. Readers are encouraged to explore ways of overcoming the barriers to collaboration in a large multi-office and multi-practice law firm.

- Understand what drives—and prevents—collaboration in law firms, including why lawyers even in the same firm behave very differently
- Explore the potential value that can be realized by working across offices and practices, and debate who actually benefits from collaboration (The firm? Individual partners? Clients?)
